Why Fuerteventura is the Perfect Place for Your Campervan Holiday

Fuerteventura is more than just an island—it's a state of mind. If you dream of opening your campervan doors in the morning to a direct view of the turquoise sea, you've come to the right place. Renting a campervan in Fuerteventura means ultimate freedom. The island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2009, captivates with its rugged, almost meditative beauty. Unlike its neighbouring islands, Fuerteventura is less developed and offers vast open spaces that you can explore with your camper on well-maintained roads.
The advantages for campers are unbeatable: The year-round mild climate makes the island a top destination, whether in January or July. The infrastructure for campers is unique: wild camping is tolerated in many places, as long as you follow the rules. This makes Fuerteventura a hotspot for anyone who loves independence. Are you a surfer? Perfect! Just follow the wind and waves from the north to the south coast. Do you love silence? Drive into the island's interior and discover sleepy villages like Betancuria. The combination of perfect beaches, a relaxed surfer atmosphere, and the ability to set up camp almost anywhere makes hiring a camper in Fuerteventura an unforgettable experience.

🚐 Tour 1: The North – Dunes, Waves & Lagoons
This tour takes you through the vibrant north of the island, known for its spectacular landscapes and laid-back surfer vibe.
- Duration: 3-4 days
- Distance: approx. 80 km (50 miles)
- Ideal for: Beach lovers, surfers (beginners & pros), families
- Day 1: Corralejo & the Dunes (approx. 15 km / 9 miles)
- Start in Corralejo, the lively hub of the north. Before you drive into town, park your campervan on the edge of the Parque Natural de Corralejo. Here, sand dunes straight out of the Sahara gently slope into the crystal-clear water. An incredible sight! Spend the afternoon on the beach and in the evening, wander through the streets of Corralejo with its many restaurants and surf shops.
- Day 2: The Surfer Triangle Lajares & Majanicho (approx. 25 km / 15 miles)
- Today, you're heading into the heart of the surf culture. Drive to Lajares, a relaxed village full of cool cafés, bakeries, and surfboard shapers. A popular craft market is held here every Saturday. From here, it's just a short hop to the north coast at Majanicho, a hotspot for experienced surfers. The dusty tracks here give you a real sense of adventure.
- Day 3: El Cotillo – Paradise for All (approx. 40 km / 25 miles)
- Your destination is El Cotillo on the west coast. This village has two faces: to the south, you'll find Playa del Castillo with wild waves, ideal for surfing. North of the lighthouse (Faro del Tostón) are the Los Lagos, white sandy coves with shallow, calm lagoons—perfect for families and relaxing. Find a nice spot for the night and enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets on the island.
🏜️ Tour 2: The Heart of the Island – History & Panoramas
This route takes you away from the coast to the historical and geographical centre of Fuerteventura. Prepare for breathtaking views and a journey into the past.
- Duration: 2-3 days
- Distance: approx. 100 km (62 miles)
- Ideal for: Culture enthusiasts, hikers, photographers
- Day 1: From Antigua to Betancuria (approx. 40 km / 25 miles)
- Start in Antigua, where you can visit a restored windmill and the Cheese Museum. From here, the FV-30 road winds through a barren mountain landscape. Your destination is Betancuria, the former capital of the island. With only about 200 inhabitants, it's a picturesque gem with white houses, a historic church, and charming little restaurants.
- Day 2: Viewpoints & Ajuy (approx. 60 km / 37 miles)
- From Betancuria, drive north to the Mirador de Morro Velosa, a viewpoint designed by César Manrique that offers an incredible panorama over the island. Then, head south towards Pájara and from there to the west coast to Ajuy. The small fishing village is famous for its black beach and the huge pirate caves (Cuevas de Ajuy), which you can reach via a short coastal path. A must-see for anyone exploring Fuerteventura by campervan.
🏝️ Tour 3: The South – Endless Beaches & Wild Coasts
The south beckons with some of Europe's most famous beaches and a detour to what is perhaps the wildest and most beautiful corner of the island.
- Duration: 3-4 days

- Day 1: Costa Calma & Playa de Sotavento (approx. 50 km / 31 miles)

- Day 2: Morro Jable & the Jandía Peninsula (approx. 40 km / 25 miles)
- Continue to Morro Jable, the largest resort in the south. Stroll along the kilometre-long beach promenade, watch the chipmunks, and enjoy fresh fish in one of the seaside restaurants. The light sandy beach here is perfect for a long day in the sun.
- Day 3 & 4: The Cofete Adventure (approx. 60 km / 37 miles, challenging!)
- Now for the adventure! From Morro Jable, a gravel track leads over a mountain pass to the legendary Playa de Cofete. Warning: The road is unpaved and demanding. Drive slowly and carefully. The reward is a 12-kilometre-long, secluded beach framed by majestic mountains. Here, at the end of the world, you'll feel the true magic of Fuerteventura. Stay overnight nearby (not directly on the beach) and experience a starry sky you'll never forget.
Getting to Fuerteventura: Your Relaxed Arrival

Your journey to the camper's paradise of Fuerteventura is easier than you think. As the island is part of Spain and the EU, getting here is straightforward for most international travellers.
✈️ By Plane (The Most Popular Option):
- Fuerteventura's international airport (IATA code: FUE) is located near the capital, Puerto del Rosario, and is served by flights from across the globe.
- From the UK & Ireland: This is the easiest route. Numerous direct flights operate year-round from major airports like London (Gatwick, Stansted, Luton), Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Dublin, and more. Airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, TUI, and Jet2 offer frequent services with a flight time of around 4-5 hours.
- From the USA & Canada: There are typically no direct flights to Fuerteventura. The most common route is to fly to a major European hub such as Madrid (MAD), Barcelona (BCN), London (LHR/LGW), or Dublin (DUB) and then take a connecting flight to FUE.
- From Australia & New Zealand: Your journey will involve at least two stops. You'll fly to a major hub in the Middle East (like Dubai or Doha) or Asia (like Singapore), then connect to a European capital, and finally catch a flight to Fuerteventura.
- From South Africa: Similar to the above, your flight path will likely take you via a major European city before connecting to the island.
- Upon arrival at the airport, you can easily take a taxi or a pre-booked transfer to our Campcruisers rental station to pick up your campervan for your Fuerteventura adventure.
A Culinary Journey: Eating & Drinking in Fuerteventura

A road trip with a camper in Fuerteventura is also a journey for your taste buds! The local cuisine is simple but delicious, based on fresh ingredients. The best part: with your own kitchen on board, you have complete flexibility.
What you absolutely must try:
- 🐐 Queso Majorero: The island's award-winning goat's cheese. It comes fresh (fresco), semi-cured (semicurado), or cured (curado). Perfect for a beach picnic!
- 🥔 Papas Arrugadas con Mojo: The classic Canarian "wrinkled potatoes" served with the typical red (spicy) or green (herb) sauce. A seriously addictive side dish.
- 🐟 Fresh Fish: In small fishing villages like Ajuy or Pozo Negro, look for restaurants serving the catch of the day ("pescado del día"). Often, you'll find "Vieja" (parrotfish) or "Sama".
- 🛍️ Markets: Visit local markets like the "Mercado de las Tradiciones" in La Oliva (every Saturday) to buy fresh vegetables, cheese, and other goodies directly from the producers to cook in your campervan.
Camping in Fuerteventura: Campsites, Wild Camping & Rules

Fuerteventura is a paradise for free spirits, and its camping infrastructure reflects that. You'll find fewer traditional campsites here, but a lot more freedom.
- 🏕️ Wild Camping & Free-Standing: This is the main reason many people rent a campervan in Fuerteventura.
- Officially, wild camping is prohibited in Spain, but in Fuerteventura, it is tolerated in many places, as long as you are respectful. The golden rules are:
- Stay away from nature reserves (e.g., the Corralejo dunes) and the immediate coastline.
- Leave no trace. Take all your rubbish with you.
- Avoid "camping behaviour" like extending your awning or setting up tables and chairs in public car parks.
- Be quiet and respect locals and other campers.
- 🚐 Official Sites & Campsites: The number is very limited, but there are a few options:
- Camping El Tostón: Located in El Cotillo. A basic but well-situated site for exploring the area.
- Camper Area Tarajalejo: A motorhome service area in the south with waste disposal and water facilities.
- Some municipalities offer designated, often free, motorhome areas (Área de Autocaravanas). Again, apps will help you find these.
The real strength of Fuerteventura lies in the ability to find remote and beautiful places where you can spend a quiet night.
