Good reasons to rent a campervan in the Canary Islands

There are many good arguments for renting a campervan on the Canary Islands. While the general camper-specific advantages such as mobility and flexibility somehow apply to every country in the world, the Canary Islands are particularly suitable for a camping holiday. They offer a dreamlike climate, a uniquely spectacular landscape and fantastic food. Secondly, the Canarios themselves are enthusiastic campers - especially in Tenerife, many residents from the capital Santa Cruz are drawn to the sunny south whenever the opportunity arises. Accordingly, people are open-minded towards campers. Thirdly, the Canary Islands are part of the EU, but not part of the European customs union, and they also have a value-added tax (IGIC) independent of the Spanish mainland between 3 and 7 percent. As a result, not only alcohol, tobacco, perfume and diesel are cheap. Food is also significantly cheaper than on the mainland. The result: an excellent price-performance ratio and also fresh fish, which you can buy directly from the fisherman here. Get ready for your road trip. Explore the volcanic beaches of Lanzarote, the rainforests of Tenerife or the sand dunes of Fuerteventura. There are numerous pitches in national parks and even directly by the sea.

How do I get to the Canary Islands by plane?

In the Canary Islands, there are several international airports that are regularly served from all over Europe – especially from Germany, Austria and Switzerland – as well as from North Africa and increasingly also from North America.

The most important airports are:

  • Tenerife South (TFS) – the largest airport in the Canary Islands with direct flights from Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Zurich, among others.
  • Tenerife North (TFN) – mainly for domestic flights and inter-island traffic
  • Gran Canaria (LPA) – very well connected to many major European cities
  • Lanzarote (ACE) – daily direct flights from Berlin, Hamburg and Amsterdam, among others
  • Fuerteventura (FUE) – particularly popular with beach holidaymakers and campers
  • La Palma (SPC) – smaller number of international connections
  • El Hierro, La Gomera, La Graciosa & Co. – accessible via feeder flights or ferries

Many international airlines as well as holiday airlines such as Condor, Eurowings, Ryanair, Vueling or Binter Canarias serve the routes. Some camper pick-ups take place in the immediate vicinity of the airports, which makes the start of the road trip particularly easy. However, there are also rental companies that organize a shuttle service or can bring your motorhome directly to the airport.

Is it possible to travel to the Canary Islands with my own campervan? Which ports offer ferry connections?

You can easily travel to the Canary Islands with your own motorhome – however, this is time-consuming and usually more expensive than a flight plus motorhome rental on site.

There are ferry connections from the Spanish mainland to several islands, especially to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The most important connection is:

  • Huelva → Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
  • Provider: Naviera Armas / Trasmediterránea
  • Travel time: approx. 36–40 hours
  • Several departures per week

Alternatively, there are also departures from Cádiz. Ferry tickets should usually be booked well in advance – especially with vehicles such as motorhomes. Prices vary depending on the season, size of the vehicle and cabin selection. The crossing can cost several hundred euros per direction.

Tip: The effort is only really worthwhile for longer stays – for short trips, renting on site is usually much more relaxed and cheaper.

Grab a campervan on the Canary Islands and enjoy some amazing food.

If you are rent a campervan in the Canary Islands, you should definitely not miss out on three dishes while traveling the islands.

  • At the top of the list is Papas arrugadas, small Canary wrinkled potatoes, which are cooked in heavily salted water until the skin is covered with a wafer-thin crust of salt. Together with Mojo verde made from coriander, garlic, oil and vinegar, or the slightly spicier mojo rojo made from peppers and chili, they are probably the most typical side dish of the islands.

  • Also a must is Pulpo a la brasa: tender pre-cooked octopus, which is then grilled over charcoal until the tentacles are slightly crispy. A splash of olive oil, some coarse sea salt and a few lemon wedges perfectly accentuate the subtly smoky sea flavor.

  • And finally, you should try freshly filled Arepas - especially in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The flatbread made from corn flour is fried or baked and then filled with juicy beef or chicken, avocado, cheese or beans, depending on your taste. The combination of crispy shell and savory interior makes Arepas, which actually come from Venezuela, a delicious snack on the go. Since a lot of Venezuelans live in the Canary Islands, you will probably find the best Arepas outside of Latin America here.
