What Makes Lake Travis Special as a Houseboat Destination
Lake Travis is located within the so-called Highland Lakes system west of Austin, Texas, and is impounded by the Mansfield Dam on the Colorado River. Unlike natural lakes, it was designed as a multipurpose reservoir: serving flood control, water supply, and power generation, as well as recreational boating. This multiple use explains why the water level does not remain constant but is actively regulated.
The body of water stretches approximately 100 kilometers with highly branched bays, steep limestone shores, and several larger side arms. For houseboat travelers, this means plenty of sheltered anchorages, but also areas that become unsafe for larger boats when water levels drop.
