Route Overview
About this Tour
The Lahn is different. No large lakes, no open landscapes – instead, a narrow river valley with castle ruins on every third hill. You feel like you are in a fairy tale (or Game of Thrones, depending on your taste). Limburg Cathedral greets you from afar – seven towers, a Romanesque-Gothic mix, an Instagram classic. From there, head downstream: Runkel lock (under a real castle!), the half-timbered jewel of Weilburg (with Germany's only ship tunnel!), Bad Ems with its imperial baths and casino. 9 locks, all manually operated. But don't worry: you rent a 'lock pick' (key) and do it yourself. After the second lock, you will be a pro. The pace is leisurely – the Lahn has no stress. Bonus: A beer garden with a water view at every corner. Hard Facts: No license required • 9 locks (self-operated with key) • Weilburg ship tunnel! • Best time: May-September • Castle density: extreme
