Location & Getting to Skåne
Skåne, Sweden's southernmost province, is located directly on the Baltic Sea and is connected to Denmark via the Öresund Bridge. The region is known for its flat landscape, characterized by rolling hills and wide fields.
Various routes are available for traveling by car. Those starting from Munich can reach Skåne via the A7 and the 'Vogelfluglinie' via Puttgarden and Rødby. The driving time is about 12 hours, covering a distance of around 1100 km. An alternative is the ferry connection from Travemünde to Trelleborg, which shortens the driving time but incurs additional costs. From Hamburg, Skåne can be reached in about 6 hours via the E47 and the Öresund Bridge.
Skåne is also easily accessible by train. There are direct train connections from Hamburg to Copenhagen, from where you can easily continue your journey to Malmö and other places in Skåne with the Öresund train. The journey from Hamburg to Malmö takes about 5 hours.
The nearest airports are Copenhagen (CPH) and Malmö (MMX). Copenhagen offers a larger selection of international connections and is directly connected to Malmö by the Öresund train. From Malmö Airport, there are bus connections to the surrounding cities.
Within Skåne, the public transport network is well-developed. Buses and trains connect the larger cities and make it easy to explore the region. For excursions into nature, we recommend the bicycle, which you can rent in many places. The Öresund Bridge is a toll bridge. The cost for a one-way trip with a car is approx. €60. Payment can be made online or on-site at the toll stations. Note that a speed limit of 110 km/h applies on motorways in Sweden. Inform yourself in advance about the current traffic rules and regulations.
The Sub-regions at a Glance
Skåne can be roughly divided into four sub-regions: Northwest Skåne, Northeast Skåne, South Skåne, and the Öresund region. Each of these regions has its own charm and offers different experiences.
Northwest Skåne is characterized by the Kullen peninsula with its dramatic cliffs and the picturesque fishing village of Mölle. Here, hikers and nature lovers will find their paradise. Visit the Kullen lighthouse, hike along the coast, and enjoy the breathtaking views. The region also includes the charming towns of Helsingborg and Höganäs, known for their ceramic production. Families feel particularly at home here, as there are many child-friendly beaches and activities.
Northeast Skåne, also known as the 'Kingdom of Lakes', is a paradise for anglers and canoeists. The region is sparsely populated and offers plenty of peace and relaxation. Visit Stenshuvud National Park with its diverse landscapes and enjoy the tranquility of the lakes. The region is ideal for couples and those seeking peace and quiet who want to escape the stress of everyday life.
South Skåne is the agricultural heart of the region. Here, wide fields and rolling hills stretch out. Visit the medieval town of Ystad, known from the Wallander crime novels, and explore the historic half-timbered houses. The region is ideal for cyclists and culture enthusiasts. Near Ystad is Ales Stenar, a mystical ship setting from the Viking Age. Retirees and history buffs will find many interesting places here.
The Öresund region, around Malmö and Lund, is the vibrant center of Skåne. This is where modernity and tradition meet. Visit Malmö with its futuristic Turning Torso and the historic old town. Lund is a lively university town with an impressive cathedral. The region is ideal for city travelers and young people. In the Öresund region, there are numerous restaurants, bars, and cultural events. Those coming from Copenhagen can easily take a day trip to Malmö, as the train journey only takes about 30 minutes.
Camping in Skåne: What to Expect?
The camping landscape in Skåne is diverse and offers something for every taste. In total, there are about 250 campsites in the region, many of which are located directly by the sea or on one of the numerous lakes.
You will find both large resort sites with pools, entertainment, and a wide range of leisure activities, as well as smaller, nature-oriented sites that are ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Many campsites also offer pitches for motorhomes with all the comfort you could wish for.
The price range for a pitch in the high season is between €30 and €50 per night; in the low season, prices are often significantly lower. For a small tent on a simple site, you can expect to pay about €20 per night. The plots are usually sufficiently large and offer either shade under trees or sun for sun worshippers.
The infrastructure at the campsites is generally good. Sanitary facilities are clean and well-maintained, Wi-Fi is often available but not always free. Electricity connections are standard, although the amperage can vary. It is best to find out in advance if an adapter is required.
Especially in the high season, it is advisable to reserve your pitch early, particularly if you prefer a specific spot or are traveling with a larger group. While last-minute opportunities do arise, the selection is often limited.
A special form of camping in Skåne is the so-called 'Allemansrätten', the Right of Public Access. It allows you to pitch your tent in the wild for one night, as long as you behave considerately and cause no damage. Note, however, that the Right of Public Access does not apply to motorized vehicles and may be restricted in nature reserves. Wild camping with a motorhome is only allowed to a very limited extent. Agriturismo camping is less common in Skåne than in other regions, but there are some farms that offer pitches and give you an insight into rural life.
Practical Information for Campers
Toll fees apply for the journey over the Öresund Bridge. The cost for a car is approx. €60 per trip. Payment can be made online or at the toll stations. In Sweden, payment is made with Swedish Krona (SEK). It is advisable to have some cash with you, but most shops and restaurants accept credit cards.
Diesel prices in Sweden are generally slightly higher than in Germany. Gas stations have long opening hours, many are even open 24/7. Large supermarket chains such as ICA, Coop, and Lidl are represented in Skåne and offer a good selection of food and camping supplies. Opening hours are usually from 8 am to 10 pm, including Sundays.
The supply of gas cylinders can be a bit more complicated, as different connections are used in Sweden. It is advisable to bring an adapter or buy a Swedish gas cylinder. Disposal stations for motorhomes are available at many campsites.
Mobile network coverage in Skåne is good, even in rural areas. Within the EU, no roaming charges apply. Medical care is also good. In the larger cities, there are hospitals and pharmacies.
In Sweden, there are some camping regulations to observe. Wild camping is, as mentioned, only allowed to a very limited extent. Special regulations apply in nature reserves. There are no environmental zones in Skåne. Tap water is generally of good quality and can be drunk without hesitation. Make sure to dispose of your waste properly and respect nature.
Insider Knowledge & Secret Tips
A camping holiday in Skåne also has its charm in the low season. In May and June, temperatures are pleasantly mild and nature is in full bloom. The campsites are less crowded and prices are often cheaper. September and October are also a good time for a visit, when the leaves turn colorful and the landscape is bathed in golden light.
Away from the well-known tourist paths, there are many less-known places and beaches to discover. For example, visit the fishing village of Kivik on the east coast, known for its apple market in autumn. Or explore the Söderåsen peninsula with its deep ravines and dense forests, accessible via Route 13.
At local markets and in farm shops, you can buy regional specialties such as cheese, sausage, honey, and jam. Visit the weekly market in Ystad, which takes place every Wednesday, or the farm shop at Eriksgården, where you can get fresh strawberries and other delicacies.
A special culinary experience is the 'Smörgåsbord', a traditional Swedish buffet with many different cold and hot dishes. Be sure to try 'Skånsk Äggakaka', a type of egg cake that is very popular in the region. Locals like to visit the restaurant 'Rökeriet' in Kåseberga, where you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood.
A worthwhile day trip leads to Dalby Söderskog National Park, Sweden's smallest national park, which nevertheless offers impressive biodiversity. The drive from Malmö takes about 20 minutes. Or visit Sofiero Castle near Helsingborg, known for its rhododendron garden and breathtaking views of the Öresund.
By the way, the best view of the Öresund Bridge can be had from Ribersborg beach in Malmö. Here you can also swim, barbecue, or simply enjoy the view.
