Your comprehensive travel guide for camping Värmland.

Location & Arrival in Värmland

Värmland is located in western Sweden, on the border with Norway. The region covers an area of around 17,500 square kilometers and is part of the historical province of Svealand. Arrival by car is easily possible, but the distance should not be underestimated. From Munich, the driving time is about 14 hours via Denmark and southern Sweden. The route leads north on the A7, then across the Öresund Bridge (toll approx. €55) to Sweden and continues on the E6 and later on country roads to Värmland. Alternatively, you can take the ferry from Travemünde or Kiel to southern Sweden, which shortens the driving time but incurs additional costs. Those starting from Hamburg need about 9 hours. The route leads via the E45 through Denmark and then either across the Öresund Bridge or one of the ferries to Sweden. The costs for the bridge or ferry must be planned for. Värmland is also accessible by train. There are regular train connections from Germany via Copenhagen to Sweden. From there, regional trains run to the larger cities of Värmland, such as Karlstad or Arvika. However, the journey takes significantly longer than by car and is usually more expensive. The nearest airport is Karlstad Airport (KSD), which is served by some European cities. From there, you can reach the surrounding towns by bus or taxi. Within Värmland, it is best to get around by car. The road network is well-developed, but the distances between individual towns can be considerable. Alternatively, there are bus connections, but they are not as frequent as in Germany. For shorter distances, bicycles are a good option and can be rented locally. In the summer months, excursion boats also operate on the larger lakes.

Overview of Värmland's Sub-regions

Värmland can be roughly divided into three sub-regions: the north, the south, and the region around Lake Vänern. Each of these regions has its own character and offers different experiences for campers. Northern Värmland is characterized by dense forests, untouched nature, and a variety of small lakes and rivers. Here, peace seekers and nature lovers will find their paradise. Places like Torsby and Stöllet are ideal for hiking, canoeing, and fishing trips. The region is sparsely populated and offers an authentic camping experience away from the major tourist crowds. Families with children appreciate the tranquility and the opportunity to discover nature through play. Southern Värmland is somewhat more densely populated and offers a mix of nature and culture. Here lies the capital Karlstad, a lively university city on Lake Vänern. In the vicinity of Karlstad, there are numerous campsites that are well-suited for families and active vacationers. Places like Kristinehamn and Filipstad offer cultural sights and good infrastructure. Athletes will find opportunities for cycling, hiking, and golfing here. The region around Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, is a popular destination for camping vacationers. The lake offers numerous swimming opportunities, boat trips, and fishing possibilities. Towns like Säffle and Arvika are located directly on the lake and offer a variety of campsites. The region is ideal for families, water sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Particularly charming are the many small islands in the lake, which can be explored by boat. Both couples and retirees who want to enjoy the peace and beautiful landscape feel at home here. In summary, Värmland has something to offer for every camper. Whether you are looking for peace and seclusion in the north, cultural diversity in the south, or water sports opportunities on Lake Vänern – Värmland is an ideal destination for a varied camping holiday.

Camping in Värmland: What to Expect?

There are an estimated 200 campsites in the region, many of which are located directly on one of the numerous lakes or rivers. A large part of the campsites are rather small and close to nature. Here, the focus is on the nature experience. However, there are also larger resort sites with pools, animation, and other amenities. These are particularly popular with families with children. Agriturismo or farm camping is less common in Värmland than in other regions of Europe, but there are some farms that offer pitches for motorhomes and tents. These often provide a direct insight into Swedish rural life. Prices for a pitch vary depending on the season, location, and equipment. In the high season (July/August), a pitch for two people costs an average of €25 to €40 per night. In the low season (June/September), prices are often significantly cheaper, sometimes under €20 per night. The pitches are usually generously sized and offer enough space for a tent or a motorhome. Many sites are surrounded by trees and offer shade. However, there are also pitches that are more sunnily located. The sanitary standard on the campsites is generally good. Most sites have clean toilets, showers, and sinks. Some sites also offer washing machines and dryers. WLAN quality varies. On larger sites, WLAN is often good; on smaller sites, it may be limited. The power supply is usually sufficient (6-10 amperes). A reservation is recommended in the high season, especially if you want a specific pitch.
