Location & Arrival in Southern Denmark
Southern Denmark stretches across the southern part of Jutland and the offshore islands of Funen, Langeland, Ærø, and Als. The region borders Central Jutland and North Jutland to the north and Germany to the south.
Arrival by car is straightforward via the E45 motorways (from Germany) and E20 (from the direction of Copenhagen). The E45 leads directly from the German-Danish border near Flensburg to Southern Denmark. There are no tolls in Denmark, except for the use of the Storebælt Bridge (approx. €34 for cars) and the Øresund Bridge (approx. €55 for cars) if you are arriving from the direction of Copenhagen.
Alternatively, you can easily reach Southern Denmark by train. The Danish state railway DSB offers regular connections from Hamburg to Flensburg and further into the region. From Flensburg, trains run towards Odense, the largest city on Funen, and other important locations in Southern Denmark. The travel time from Hamburg to Flensburg is about 2 hours, and from there, the travel time varies depending on the destination.
The nearest international airport is Billund Airport (BLL), which is served by numerous European cities. From Billund, you can reach various locations in Southern Denmark by rental car, bus, or train.
Within Southern Denmark, it is best to get around by car or bicycle. A well-developed network of cycle paths runs through the entire region, allowing you to explore the landscape on two wheels. Ferries run regularly between the islands, providing convenient access to the individual isles. Buses connect the larger towns, but they are less frequent, especially in rural areas.
Overview of the Sub-regions
Southern Denmark can be roughly divided into four main regions: Jutland, Funen, the island world, and the region around Kolding. Each of these zones has its own character and offers different experiences for camping vacationers.
Jutland, the mainland part of Denmark, impresses with its vast landscapes, the North Sea coast, and historic towns like Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark. Here you will find numerous campsites near the coast or in the midst of the rolling hills. Families and nature lovers especially feel at home here.
Funen, also known as the Garden of Denmark, enchants with its green hills, picturesque villages, and numerous castles and manor houses. The island is a paradise for cyclists and hikers. Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, is a cultural center with numerous museums and theaters. On Funen, there are both large camping resorts with extensive facilities and smaller, nature-oriented sites.
The island world of Southern Denmark, consisting of islands like Langeland, Ærø, and Als, offers a relaxed atmosphere and untouched nature. Here you will find peace and seclusion away from mass tourism. Ærøskøbing, the capital of Ærø, is a charming little town with well-preserved half-timbered houses. On the islands, there are mainly smaller campsites with a family atmosphere, ideal for those seeking peace and nature lovers.
The region around Kolding, in the north of Southern Denmark, is characterized by its proximity to the Little Belt and offers a varied landscape with forests, lakes, and beaches. Koldinghus, an impressive castle ruin, is a landmark of the city. In this region, you will find both larger campsites with animation and leisure activities as well as quieter sites in nature.
