Arrival in Sardinia: How do you get there?
Sardinia is very easy to reach from German-speaking countries by plane or ferry. However, to reach the ferry from Germany, you have to travel 720km (Munich), only from Switzerland or Austria the journey to Genoa or Livorno is (insignificantly) shorter. So, if you are not dependent on renting a camper van in Germany, Austria or Switzerland in order to cross over, the plane is certainly the better choice, especially because fuel and tolls in Italy are quite expensive and the ferry trip also costs a lot of money. It's easier with a budget airline: Olbia Airport offers flight connections to 76 European cities, while Cagliari Airport serves 63 cities in 16 countries. In addition, there is Alghero Airport, from which another 26 destinations are served. Here are the travel options in brief:
- ✈️ By plane: The three international airports are Cagliari (CAG) in the south, Olbia (OLB) in the northeast and Alghero (AHO) in the northwest. They are served directly by many German, Austrian and Swiss cities.
- ⛴️ By ferry: A popular option to slow down the journey. There are ferry connections from the Italian mainland ports of Genoa, Livorno and Civitavecchia as well as from France (Toulon, Nice) to the Sardinian ports of Olbia, Porto Torres and Cagliari.
After your arrival, you can easily reach the pick-up point of your camper. The exact address of our partner's rental station will be provided in your booking documents. Depending on the location, the pick-up can take place directly at the airport or in the immediate vicinity.
Sardinia's Cuisine: A Feast for the Palate
Sardinian cuisine is unique, authentic and incredibly delicious. And in Sardinia they are proud of it. If you are travelling in Sardinia with a motorhome, you don't necessarily have to go out, although we can only highly recommend Sardinian gastronomy, because there is no doubt that the Sardinians can cook excellently. But if you want to or have to save your wallet, you can still have a good time in Sardinia without having to pay expensive restaurant prices. What else do you have a motorhome with a fridge and a gas stove for? Fresh products are also available in Sardinia at the local markets, directly from the fisherman or - quite classic - in the supermarket.
Here are a few Sardinian specialities that you should definitely try - of course, pizza is also an option, which also tastes good in Sardinia:
- Porceddu: The famous suckling pig, traditionally grilled on a spit.
- Pane Carasau: The wafer-thin, crispy shepherd's bread.
- Culurgiones: Handmade dumplings, often filled with potatoes, Pecorino and mint.
- Pecorino Sardo: The spicy sheep's cheese, one of the most famous specialities of Sardinia, which you should definitely have in your luggage on the return flight at the latest. In Italy, by the way, you can also get it very fresh, then it is still very soft and creamy.
- Mirto: The traditional liqueur made from the berries of the myrtle - the perfect finish to any meal.
- Ichnuza: The beer from Sardinia, which has now even become a trendy drink in some European cities and - ice-cold - is an absolute recommendation.
Camping in Sardinia: Dream spots by the sea
Sardinia is excellently equipped for campers and offers a fantastic infrastructure, especially along the coasts. However, you should definitely not wild camp, because it is forbidden in Italy, and if Italy forbids anything that has anything to do with road traffic in the broadest sense, then that means: The fines are hefty.
🏕️ Wild camping & free standing:
- Wild camping is strictly forbidden in Sardinia, as in the whole of Italy. This is consistently monitored, especially in the coastal regions and in summer, and is punished with very high fines. We strongly advise against it.
🚐 Official pitches & campsites:
- The good news: Sardinia has a huge density of beautiful campsites ("Campeggi"), many of which are located directly by the sea.
- There are also numerous motorhome pitches ("Aree di Sosta") and a growing number of "Agricampeggi", where you can stay on farms and enjoy local products.
On Campcruisers you will find a selection of bookable camping and private motorhome pitches. We are also looking for campsites and private providers of pitches in Sardinia who would like to join us. So just see if there is already a place in Sardinia for you.
