*Last updated: September 21, 2026* Sweden is one of the few European countries where motorhome travelers encounter virtually no highway tolls over thousands of kilometers, yet unprepared travelers still face specific pitfalls regarding wild camping rules, border controls, and vehicle dimensions. Those planning a motorhome holiday in Sweden benefit from clear regulations if they know them, but risk unnecessary fines if they don’t.
EU citizens can enter Sweden with a valid ID card or passport. However, since 2026, Sweden has implemented permanent border controls, which may lead to waiting times. The Foreign Office recommends keeping all vehicle documents readily available.
The following documents should always be carried:
Since February 1, 2026, Sweden has abolished vehicle tax for motorhomes and caravans, which applies to vehicles registered in Sweden. For vehicles from Germany, this does not affect German vehicle tax.
Safety note: In 2026, the Foreign Office explicitly warns against break-ins into motorhomes at campsites and rest areas in Sweden. Valuables should never be left visible inside the vehicle.
The best time for a motorhome trip in Sweden is between mid-June and late August. During this period, most campsites and pitches are open, daytime temperatures range from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the days are long.
| Travel Period | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| June, August | Long days, all sites open, midnight sun in the north | High season, sites fully booked, higher prices |
| May / September | Quieter, lower prices, beautiful nature | Some sites still/already closed |
| October, April | Northern Lights possible, winter landscapes | Many sites closed, winter equipment required |
For Northern Lights trips, October to March is suitable, but requires a winter-ready vehicle and appropriate gear.
Rental costs for a motorhome in Sweden vary greatly depending on size and season. As a rough guide: during peak season (July/August), daily rates for a standard vehicle (4–6 people) typically range from 150 to 300 euros per day, including basic amenities. Outside the main season, prices are significantly lower. Before booking, check what’s included in the rental price.
Typically included in the rental price are:
Not always included: full coverage insurance, camping fees, ferry tickets, fuel.
Ongoing costs also include pitch fees (about 20–45 euros per night at campsites) as well as fuel. Gasoline and diesel are more expensive in Sweden than in Germany; check current prices before departure, as they fluctuate frequently.
Sweden’s road network is well-suited for motorhomes, provided vehicle dimensions are observed. There is no general highway toll in Sweden, but a congestion charge (Trängselskatt) applies in Stockholm and Gothenburg, which also affects foreign motorhomes and is automatically recorded.
Popular routes for a motorhome holiday in Sweden:
Under the Terrängkörningslagen, driving off public roads in motorized vehicles is prohibited on forest trails and unpaved roads.
For motorhomes, the maximum dimensions allowed on Swedish public roads are: length 12 meters (single vehicle), width 2.55 meters, height 4 meters. Towed combinations (motorhome with trailer) may be up to 18.75 meters long.
Additional rules often overlooked:
Vehicles over 3.5 tons are subject to weight restrictions on some roads, especially on forest paths in spring (Tjällossningstid, thawing period).
Motorhome travel in Swedish winter is possible but challenging. Many campsites and pitches close between October and April. Those who still travel need a winter-ready vehicle with insulated water lines, sufficient heating capacity, and winter tires.
On main roads, snow and ice are usually cleared promptly. However, remote roads in Norrland can remain impassable for days. Before winter travel, it’s advisable to check current road conditions via Trafikverket (the Swedish Road Administration).
Sweden’s right of public access (Allemansrätten) allows short-term stays in nature, but it explicitly does not apply to motorhomes and caravans. Wild camping with a motorhome is officially prohibited in Sweden and violates both the Terrängkörningslagen and local regulations.
What is actually permitted:
Pitches (Ställplatser) in Sweden often offer utilities and disposal services (fresh water, greywater disposal, electricity), but their quality and facilities vary widely. Prices usually range from 10 to 30 euros per night.
SCR-certified campsites offer a higher standard but come at a correspondingly higher price. Bookings during peak season should be made well in advance.
For a first motorhome trip to Sweden, at least two weeks is recommended. If you only want to explore the west coast or Dalarna, 10 to 14 days should suffice. For Lapland or a tour across Sweden, plan for at least three to four weeks.
Sweden is larger than Germany; the distance from Malmö to Abisko is about 1,700 kilometers. Covering more than 300 to 400 kilometers per day means missing out on the highlights.
If you don’t want to bring your own vehicle, several options are available:
For many travelers, the ferry is the most convenient way to enter Sweden, as the vehicle is loaded and the crossing can be used as a rest period.
Even experienced travelers make avoidable mistakes on their first trip to Sweden. The most frequent ones:
A motorhome holiday in Sweden works best with concrete preparation rather than vague optimism. These steps help avoid the most common issues:
Anyone traveling to Sweden by motorhome who completes these steps can look forward to one of Europe’s most beautiful motorhome journeys.
