Route Overview
About this Tour
Sri Lanka's Hill Country is like a time travel to British colonial times – just warmer and with better food. This route takes you from Colombo to the cultural heart Kandy with the Temple of the Tooth, then through endless emerald-green tea plantations to Nuwara Eliya ('Little England' of Sri Lanka) and finally to Ella, the most relaxed place on the island. The legendary train journey through the mountains is a must-do, and along the way waterfalls, elephants, and the friendliest people in Asia await.
Your Journey in Detail
🍵Kandy & Culture
Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural center – the Temple of the Tooth (Buddha's tooth relic) is highly sacred. The Perahera Festival in August is spectacular with elephant parades. The city lies picturesquely on Kandy Lake with colonial villas around it.
🚂Tea Country
The tea plantations between Kandy and Ella are hypnotic – endless green hills with Tamil pickers in colorful saris. Visit a factory like Mackwoods or Damro for insights into tea production. Nuwara Eliya is cool (pack a jacket!) and Victorianly quirky.
🐘Ella Magic
Ella is the place to arrive. The train ride from Kandy (7 hours, reserve!) is breathtaking – one of the most beautiful in the world. In Ella: Little Adam's Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge, and endless cafés with mountain views. Hike Ella Rock for sunrise.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Book train tickets 2-3 weeks ahead online! First class is worth it.
- ✓Left-hand traffic and chaotic – tuk-tuk tours as alternative to self-driving.
- ✓Elephant orphanages critical: Pinnawala controversial, Udawalawe more ethical.
