Route Overview
About this Tour
Slovenia has only 47 kilometers of coastline, but what a coastline! Venetian architecture, turquoise water, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere reminiscent of Italy (which is just a few kilometers away). Inland await the wonders of the Karst – a bizarre landscape of underground caves among the world's most spectacular.
Your Journey in Detail
🌊Postojna Cave – Underground Cathedral
Postojna Cave is Slovenia's most-visited natural monument – and rightly so. On a train ride (yes, there's a train in the cave!) and subsequent walking paths, you explore 5 kilometers of a 24-kilometer cave system that formed over millions of years.
🐎Lipica – Birthplace of the Lipizzaners
Lipica is the birthplace of the world-famous Lipizzaner horses – those elegant white horses that perform their acrobatic displays at Vienna's Spanish Riding School. Since 1580, these noble animals have been bred here.
🍷Piran & the Adriatic Coast
Piran is the jewel of the Slovenian coast – a perfectly preserved Venetian town on a peninsula where streets are so narrow only pedestrians fit. The Sečovlje salt pans have been used since the Middle Ages and produce 'white gold' – Fleur de Sel among the world's finest.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Slovenia's coast is tiny and packed in high season – come early, stay late!
- ✓Kraški pršut (Karst ham) and Teran wine are the perfect souvenirs!
- ✓Combine coast and Alps – in Slovenia everything is max 2-3 hours apart.
