Route Overview
About this Tour
Spiš in eastern Slovakia is a historically rich region once shaped by German settlers and today home to some of the best-preserved medieval sites in Europe. Spiš Castle, Central Europe's largest castle ruin, is the highlight.
Your Journey in Detail
🏰Košice – Cultural Capital of the East
Košice is Slovakia's second-largest city and was European Capital of Culture 2013. The old town is immaculately restored, dominated by St. Elisabeth Cathedral, Slovakia's largest church, with a Gothic high altar among Central Europe's most significant.
⛪Spiš Castle & Levoča
Spiš Castle is simply overwhelming – one of Europe's largest castle ruins, stretching across an entire hill with its silhouette visible from many kilometers. Levoča nearby is a UNESCO World Heritage site – a completely walled city whose Gothic core has scarcely changed since the Middle Ages.
🚣Pieniny – Raft Ride Through the Gorge
The Pieniny Mountains on the Polish border are a special national park – here the Dunajec River has carved a spectacular gorge with up to 300-meter limestone walls over millions of years. The traditional way to experience this gorge is the raft ride with 'Plťe' – wooden rafts steered by Goral highlanders.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Book raft rides in advance in summer – long waits possible on weekends!
- ✓Spiš had 24 German 'Spiš towns' – German was spoken here until 1945.
- ✓Combine with Poland: the Pieniny extend on both sides of the border, crossing is no problem!
