Route Overview
About this Tour
The High Tatras are a geological wonder: a compact mountain range just 26 kilometers long but with over 25 peaks above 2,500 meters. In barely an hour, you can climb from green valleys into alpine rock faces – a paradise for mountaineers, hikers, and nature lovers.
Your Journey in Detail
🏔️Poprad & Gateway to the Tatras
Poprad is the gateway to the High Tatras. From here, the Tatra railway (a historic narrow-gauge line) runs directly into the mountains. Štrbské Pleso is the iconic Tatra destination – a perfectly turquoise mountain lake at 1,346 meters, surrounded by jagged peaks.
🦌Štrbské Pleso & High Mountain World
Štrbské Pleso is undoubtedly the most iconic place in the High Tatras. The walk around the lake is family-friendly, but challenging high-altitude hikes to Rysy (2,503 m), the highest accessible peak for regular mountaineers, also start here.
🎿Liptov – Thermal Spas & Tradition
The Liptov region south of the Tatras is perfect for relaxation. The thermal parks 'Bešeňová' and 'Tatralandia' are among Central Europe's largest water parks: slides, wave pools, thermal springs, and even year-round outdoor pools with mountain views.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Buy e-vignette online before entry – 10-day vignette costs only €12!
- ✓Tatra hiking trails are well-marked: Red = challenging, Blue = medium, Yellow/Green = easy.
- ✓Slovak cuisine is very meaty – for vegetarians: 'Bryndzové pirohy' (cheese dumplings) are the rescue!
