Route Overview
About this Tour
Transylvania is one of Europe's most mythical places – a region shaped by the Carpathians, medieval Saxon settlements, and vampire legends that have fired imaginations since Bram Stoker. Here wild bears still roam ancient forests, and villages look frozen in time.
Your Journey in Detail
🏰Brașov & Bran Castle
Brașov (Kronstadt) is the gateway to Transylvania – a beautifully restored city with Saxon heritage, overlooked by the Carpathians. The Black Church, Europe's largest Gothic church east of Vienna, dominates the market square. Bran Castle nearby is the 'Dracula Castle' – the atmosphere is perfectly spooky and photogenic.
🐻Fortified Churches – UNESCO World Heritage
Transylvania's unique cultural heritage are the 'fortified churches' – fortified houses of worship built by Saxon settlers in the Middle Ages to defend against Tatars and Turks. Over 150 architectural jewels still exist, with seven on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Viscri became world-famous thanks to Prince Charles who owns a restored farmhouse there.
🏛️Cluj-Napoca & Northern Carpathians
Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg) is Transylvania's young, vibrant center – a student city with energy reminiscent of Berlin or Barcelona. From here, explore the Apuseni Mountains – wild karst landscapes with caves (including the Scărișoara ice cave, one of Europe's largest) and traditional villages.
