Route Overview
About this Tour
The Transfăgărășan is legendary: a high mountain road crossing the Carpathians, called 'the world's best road' by Jeremy Clarkson. Built in the 1970s by Ceaușescu as a military emergency road, it's now a mecca for motorcycle and campervan enthusiasts.
Your Journey in Detail
🛣️Experiencing the Transfăgărășan
The drive typically begins in Sibiu or Brașov and leads 90 kilometers through the southern Carpathians' most spectacular landscapes. The highest point is 2,042 meters at Bâlea Pass, where snow patches linger even during valley summer heat. Bâlea Lake is a crystal-clear glacial lake surrounded by steep rock walls.
🏔️Nature & Wildlife of the Carpathians
Romania hosts the largest brown bear population outside Russia – over 6,000 animals roam the Carpathians. The chances of seeing a bear in the wild are real – especially at twilight along the Transfăgărășan. Besides bears, wolves, lynx, and deer live here – one of Europe's last true wilderness areas.
🦇History & Dracula's Real Castle
Few know that the real castle of historical Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler, model for Dracula) isn't Bran Castle but the ruins of Poenari – high above the valley, reachable via 1,480 steps through dense forest. The climb is strenuous but the reward is Romania's most atmospheric vampire location.
