Your Journey in Detail

🏰Nizwa – The Historic Heart

Nizwa, about two hours from Muscat, was the ancient capital of Oman and remains the cultural heart of the country. The massive round fort from the 17th century dominates the cityscape – the view from the tower is impressive. The Friday market (Souq) is legendary: locals trade goats, camels, dates, and silver in an atmosphere that hasn't changed for centuries. The craftsmanship (khanjars – traditional daggers, silver jewelry, pottery) is unsurpassed. The surrounding area offers spectacular forts: Bahla (UNESCO World Heritage site), Jabrin with its magnificent ceilings, and Al Hamra, a deserted mud-brick village that has become a ghost town. The roads to the mountain villages are paved but steep – the views of terraced rose gardens and falaj (traditional irrigation systems) are unique. The Jebel Akhdar ('Green Mountain') plateau, accessible only with 4WD, offers rose and pomegranate plantations, cool temperatures, and luxury camping options.

🏔️Jebel Shams – The Great Canyon

Jebel Shams is the highest mountain in Oman at 3,009 meters, but the real attraction is Wadi Ghul – often called the 'Grand Canyon of Arabia', although the comparison hardly captures the reality. The gorge is 1,000 meters deep, with vertical rock walls that glow in warm ochre and red tones. The Balcony Walk, a path along the cliffs, offers breathtaking views and leads to a deserted village that was once only reachable by rope. Nights on Jebel Shams are cold (below zero in winter!) – for campervans a welcome change from the coastal heat. The starry sky here is overwhelming: no light pollution, the Milky Way within reach. Access to the summit requires a 4WD vehicle with ground clearance, but the main viewpoints are reachable with normal vehicles. Mountain road driving skills are necessary: hairpin bends without guardrails! The small villages along the way live from traditional agriculture – hospitality here is warm and authentic.

🐪Wahiba Sands – The Desert Lives

The Wahiba Sands (officially Sharqiya Sands) are Oman's sand desert – 180 km long, 80 km wide, with dunes that tower up to 100 meters high. For campervan enthusiasts, this is the ultimate adventure: dune driving (only with 4WD and experienced guide!), camel riding at sunset, and staying overnight under a starry sky that leaves you speechless. The desert is not empty: Bedouin families live here with their herds, and Omani hospitality is legendary – refusing an invitation to tea would be impolite. The desert camps offer different levels of comfort, from authentic tents to luxury 'glamping' options. The edge of the Wahiba is reachable with normal vehicles (Bidiyya, Al Wasil); deeper into the dunes only with all-wheel drive and lowering tire pressure. The nightly silence is absolute – no plane, no engine, only the wind. The return trip to Muscat via the coast near Sur offers a contrast: from the sand to the sea in a few hours. Practical: Oman's infrastructure for off-road tourists is growing. 4WD rentals with camping equipment are possible, local guides for desert excursions are recommended.
