Route Overview
About this Tour
The South Island is the New Zealand of dreams – New Zealand's 'Mainland' as locals call it. This route is a greatest hits album: Nelson & Abel Tasman for beaches, West Coast for glaciers, Queenstown for adrenaline, Milford Sound for fjord magic, and Otago hinterland for endless gravel roads. The South Island is less populated, wilder, and even friendlier – if that's possible. Distances are greater, so plan more time.
Your Journey in Detail
🏔️Nelson & West Coast
Nelson is the sunshine city – craft beer, art galleries, and access to Abel Tasman National Park by kayak. The West Coast is wild: storm-lashed, lonely, with unique Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki. Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are walkable (with guide!).
🌊Queenstown & Fjords
Queenstown is the adrenaline capital of the world: bungy, skydiving, jetboat, zorbing – imagination is the only limit. Milford Sound is meditative in contrast: steep rock walls, waterfalls, and seals. Doubtful Sound is even emptier.
🐧Otago & East
Otago's hinterland is pure 'Lord of the Rings' landscape – Glenorchy, Paradise, Skipper's Canyon. Further east await Moeraki Boulders (giant spherical stones on beach) and Dunedin has the steepest street in the world. Kaikōura for whale watching.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Milford Sound Road: Stunning, but only drive during day (rockfall at night).
- ✓Rent snow chains in winter – some passes legally require them.
- ✓Queenstown is expensive! Glenorchy as overnight alternative, 45 min away.
