Route Overview
About this Tour
New Zealand's North Island is more diverse than its reputation – not everything is 'Lord of the Rings' here, although Hobbiton awaits of course! The route leads from Auckland via Bay of Islands in the north, then through the geothermal wonderland Rotorua with bubbling geysers and Maori culture, on to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (one of the most beautiful day hikes in the world) and finally to Wellington, the coolest little capital in the world. Freedom camping is strictly regulated in New Zealand – only certified self-contained vehicles may park freely.
Your Journey in Detail
🌋Auckland & North
Auckland is the 'City of Sails' – relaxed, multicultural, and surrounded by two harbors. Bay of Islands is a must: 144 islands, dolphins, and the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Cape Reinga at the northern tip is mythical – where two seas meet.
🏝️Rotorua & Taupo
Rotorua stinks – literally! The sulfur springs are everywhere, and the smell is part of it. Wai-O-Tapu is a geothermal color feast, Te Puia shows Maori culture and geysers. Lake Taupo beckons for bungy jumping and trout fishing.
🎬Tongariro & Wellington
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is legendary: 19.4 km through volcanic landscape, sulfur lakes, and 'Mordor' scenery. Wellington is coffee culture, craft beer, and more restaurants per capita than New York. Te Papa Museum is world-class.
