Route Overview
About this Tour
This route combines Namibia's absolute highlights and is ideal for first-timers. Etosha National Park is one of the best places in Africa for a self-drive safari – elephants, lions, rhinos, and giraffes gather by the dozens at the waterholes. The drive to Swakopmund leads through cosmic moonscapes, while Sossusvlei with the highest dunes in the world forms the dramatic conclusion. Namibia is made for campers: wide tracks, clear nights, friendly people.
Your Journey in Detail
🐘Etosha Safari
Etosha is one of the most accessible national parks in Africa – no expensive safaris necessary, you drive yourself! The camps in the park have lighted waterholes where you can observe lions and rhinos at night. The Okaukuejo waterhole is legendary. Plan at least 2-3 nights for different regions of the park.
🏖️Swakopmund Pause
After the safari, Swakopmund is perfect for taking a breath. The German bakery, colonial heritage, and cool Atlantic breeze are a welcome contrast to the heat of the bush. Adventure options: sandboarding, skydiving, quad bike tours in the desert.
🌄Sossusvlei Finale
Sossusvlei is the dramatic highlight. Leave before sunrise to experience the dunes in the best light. The hike up Dune 45 or Big Daddy is strenuous on the yielding sand, but the view rewards every step. Deadvlei behind it is one of the most photogenic places on earth.
