Route Overview
About this Tour
The Bay of Kotor is like a Nordic fjord transplanted into the Mediterranean. Steep mountains plunge directly into the water, Venetian towns cling to the slopes, and the light in the evening makes everything shimmer golden. This compact route leads you along the most spectacular coast of the Balkans: from Herceg Novi through the winding bay to Perast with its church islands, on to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kotor, and finally to Budva, the Montenegrin Miami. Short distances, maximum impressions.
Your Journey in Detail
🏰Herceg Novi & Einfahrt
The entry into the bay begins in Herceg Novi, a relaxed city with Austro-Hungarian heritage. From here the coastal road winds along the water – sometimes through tunnels, sometimes with panoramic views. The narrow strait of Verige marks the most dramatic point.
⛵Perast & Kotor
Perast is a gem: a stone village stretching along the water, with views of two tiny church islands – Our Lady of the Rocks is a must! Kotor itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site: a medieval fortified city hemmed in between the sea and 1,700m high mountains. The climb to San Giovanni Fortress is worth every drop of sweat.
🏖️Budva & Beaches
Budva is the counter-program: here the old old town meets modern beach life. The beaches of the Riviera are beautiful but full in summer. The island of Sveti Stefan (only views from the shore for mere mortals) is Montenegro's postcard star. A perfect finale!
💡Practical Tips
- ✓The coastal road is clogged in summer – drive early in the morning or late in the evening.
- ✓In Kotor, cruise ship days are hell – check the ship calendar in advance!
- ✓Montenegro uses the Euro, although not in the EU – practical for European campers!
