Route Overview
About this Tour
Hokkaido is Japan's great secret. While most tourists commute between Tokyo and Kyoto, a completely different world unfolds in the north: endless lavender fields, steaming volcanoes, bears in the wild, and onsen that seem to reach the sky. The largest and most sparsely populated island in Japan is like for campers made – wide roads, spectacular nature, and a relaxed atmosphere that is a welcome change from the hectic main island. Whether in blooming summer or snowy winter – Hokkaido enchants.
Your Journey in Detail
🌸Sapporo & Start
Sapporo is Hokkaido's capital and your starting point. The city is known for its beer, its ramen culture, and the annual snow festival. Pick up your camper here and start towards central Hokkaido. The roads are wide, traffic is calm – a relaxed start to the adventure.
🦌Furano & Biei
In the heart of Hokkaido lies a riot of color: the lavender fields of Furano (July) and the rolling hills of Biei look like paintings. Endless photo opportunities! In the area called Patchwork Road, potato, wheat and flower fields alternate in perfect strips. A dream for every photographer.
♨️Shiretoko & Onsen
Shiretoko National Park is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and home to brown bears, sea eagles, and whales. The peninsula feels like the end of the world – and it almost is: Russia is within sight! Finally, the hot springs of Noboribetsu await – a valley full of steaming fumaroles and luxury ryokans.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓In winter, definitely choose a camper with a parking heater – it gets really cold (-20°C)!
- ✓Bear spray is available in some camping shops – better to have and not need.
- ✓Hokkaido has excellent dairy products – definitely try soft ice cream and cheese!
