Route Overview
About this Tour
The Westfjords are an adventure for the experienced. This rugged peninsula in the northwest is Iceland's most sparsely populated region – fewer than 1% of Icelanders live here, but an incredible share of dramatic beauty and wilderness. Gravel roads wind along steep fjord walls, puffins nest by the millions on Europe's highest cliffs, and mighty Dynjandi waterfall plunges in seven stages over 100 meters.
Your Journey in Detail
🦅Ísafjörður – Heart of the Fjords
The journey to the Westfjords is already an adventure. From Stykkishólmur on Snæfellsnes Peninsula, take the Baldur ferry (campervan possible!) across Breiðafjörður. Ísafjörður is the cultural and administrative center of the Westfjords – about 2,600 residents spread across colorful wooden houses on a sheltered fjord.
💧Dynjandi – The Thundering Falls
Dynjandi is the most impressive waterfall in the Westfjords – and one of Iceland's most beautiful. It cascades in seven tiers over 100 meters, with the top tier fanning out like a bridal veil. The hike to the main falls passes all seven tiers, each with its own name.
🏔️Látrabjarg – Europe's Westernmost Point
The Látrabjarg cliffs are 14 kilometers long and up to 440 meters high – Europe's largest bird cliffs and its westernmost point. In summer, millions of birds nest here: puffins (Lundi!), guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills. The puffins are remarkably tame and allow close approach – a dream for photographers!
💡Practical Tips
- ✓4WD campervan recommended! Many roads in the Westfjords are gravel with steep climbs.
- ✓Best time: mid-June to mid-August – puffins are there and all roads are open.
- ✓Refuel at every opportunity – gas stations in the Westfjords are rare and pricier!
