Route Overview
About this Tour
The Danube Bend north of Budapest is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful sections of the entire Danube. Here Europe's second-longest river squeezes between forested mountains and makes a sharp turn south. The route combines some of Hungary's most beautiful small towns with the pulsating capital Budapest.
Your Journey in Detail
🏰Budapest – The Queen of the Danube
Budapest is a divided city – literally: the Danube separates hilly, royal Buda from flat, lively Pest. Connected by magnificent bridges like the Chain Bridge, one of the landmarks. In Buda, the Castle looms, a vast complex of palace, Matthias Church, and Fisherman's Bastion offering the best views of Parliament on the opposite bank.
🎨Szentendre & Visegrád
Szentendre is the most charming town of the Danube Bend – narrow cobblestone streets, baroque churches, artist studios, and galleries everywhere. Visegrád nearby was once home to Hungary's most powerful king, Matthias Corvinus. The upper castle on the mountaintop offers panoramic views that take your breath away.
♨️Esztergom & Thermal Baths
Esztergom is Hungary's religious capital. The Basilica, the country's largest church, towers majestically over the Danube – from the viewing dome, you look out at Slovakia. Hungary is the land of thermal springs – over 1,000 bubble nationwide.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Buy e-vignette online before entry – checks are frequent and fines significant!
- ✓Thermal baths are inexpensive (often under €10) – ask about family rates!
