About this Tour

Lake Balaton, the 'Hungarian Sea', is Central Europe's largest lake and has been the vacation paradise of Hungarians and their neighbors for generations. The Puszta, the Hungarian steppe, is the exact opposite: endless grasslands, horseback herders, well sweeps, and a sense of vastness like only America's prairies can match.

Your Journey in Detail

🌊Balaton – Hungary's Sea

Lake Balaton stretches 77 kilometers and is up to 12 kilometers wide, yet surprisingly shallow – perfect for families with children who can wade far into the water. Tihany, a peninsula that almost feels like an island, is the postcard motif par excellence.

🐴The Puszta & Hortobágy

The Puszta is Hungary's soul – a seemingly endless grass steppe once roamed by nomadic horsemen and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. In Hortobágy National Park, 'Csikós', the Hungarian cowboys, gallop in traditional blue-and-white costumes.

🌶️Debrecen & Culinary Hungary

Debrecen is Hungary's second city and the Protestant center of the country. The Great Reformed Church dominates the central square. Don't miss Debreceni kolbász – the spicy paprika sausage invented here.

Travel tips

💡Practical Tips

  • ✓Balaton in July/August is full of families – June and September are more relaxed and just as warm!
  • ✓The Puszta is hot and shadeless in summer – bring sunscreen and plenty of water!
  • ✓Hungarian paprika isn't a substitute for hot chilies – it's aromatic-mild and the heart of the cuisine.
