About this Tour

Svaneti in Georgia's remote northwest is unlike anywhere else in Europe. Medieval defensive towers (up to 25 meters tall) rise from every village, built by clans to protect against invaders and each other. The isolation preserved a unique culture with its own language and traditions.

Your Journey in Detail

🏰The Road to Svaneti

Getting to Svaneti is an adventure – the road from Zugdidi climbs through spectacular river gorges and increasingly remote mountain scenery. The road is now paved to Mestia but remains dramatic.

🥾Mestia – Gateway to Svaneti

Mestia is Svaneti's main town – surprisingly developed with its famous towers rising next to modern buildings. The Svaneti Museum has incredible medieval treasures including gold artifacts and painted icons.

🍯Ushguli – Europe's Highest Village

Ushguli at 2,200m is one of Europe's highest continuously inhabited settlements. The cluster of towers against Mt. Shkhara (5,193m) is UNESCO-listed and utterly unforgettable. The road is rough – 4WD or very careful driving required.
