Route Overview
About this Tour
Finnish Lakeland is one of Europe's best-kept secrets: 188,000 lakes connected by rivers and canals, surrounded by endless birch and conifer forests. This is where Finns retreat in summer for 'mökkielämä' (cottage life) and the sauna.
Your Journey in Detail
🏞️Savonlinna & Saimaa
Savonlinna is the heart of Finnish Lakeland – a small town on islands connected by bridges, dominated by Olavinlinna Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in northern Europe. The famous Savonlinna Opera Festival attracts visitors every summer.
🧖Thousand Lakes & Cottage Life
Saimaa is Finland's largest lake system – actually more than 4,000 connected lakes interconnected like a labyrinth. The Saimaa ringed seal lives here – one of the world's most endangered seal species with only 400 remaining individuals.
🐻Midnight Sun in Summer
In June and July, the sun never fully sets in northern Finland – the 'Midnight Sun' is surreal and unforgettable. The endless daylight enables outdoor activities around the clock. Swimming at midnight in a warm lake is pure Finnish bliss.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Everyman's Right (Jokamiehenoikeus) allows camping nearly anywhere – respect nature!
- ✓Mosquitoes in summer can be intense – bring repellent and head nets!
- ✓Try public saunas – Finns are surprisingly open and it's a great cultural experience.
