Route Overview
About this Tour
The Dominican Republic is more than all-inclusive – this route shows you the real 'Quisqueyana'. Start is Santo Domingo, the oldest city in the Americas with UNESCO World Heritage Zona Colonial. Then follow the north coast via Puerto Plata to the surfer stronghold Cabarete and finally to Samaná, where humpback whales calve from January to March. Infrastructure is good, Dominicans are warm, and prices are a fraction of Caribbean islands.
Your Journey in Detail
🏖️Santo Domingo
The Zona Colonial is the heart of Spanish colonial history in the Americas – the first cathedral, the first hospital, the first university in the New World. The city pulses with history but also modern nightlife at the Malecón.
🐋North Coast & Cabarete
Puerto Plata was once the tourist center – a bit dated now but charming. Cabarete on the other hand is vibrant: kitesurfers from all over the world, beach bars, and consistent wind and waves from March to September.
🏄Samaná Peninsula
Samaná is like its own country – greener, quieter, wilder. El Limón waterfall is spectacular, Playa Rincón and Las Galeras beaches are paradise. Highlight: From January to March, thousands of humpback whales pass through Samaná Bay for mating.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Drive defensively – mopeds and guaguas (minibuses) have their own rules!
- ✓Whales in Samaná: Book tours in Samaná town, best time: February.
- ✓Cash essential outside tourist zones, ATMs sometimes empty.
