Route Overview
About this Tour
The Carretera Austral is an adventure of superlatives. This legendary road stretches over 1,240 kilometers through Chilean Patagonia – a region so wild and untouched that you feel like a real explorer. From Puerto Montt, you start your journey into the deep south of Chile. The road, mostly unpaved, snakes through dense rainforests, past roaring waterfalls, and along turquoise glacier lakes. Small ferries take you across fjords, while snow-capped volcanoes tower over the horizon. The special thing about this route: You are often alone for hours, surrounded only by overwhelming nature. In Futaleufú, world-class white water rafting awaits you, while Coyhaique serves as a charming supply point. The final in Villa O'Higgins is unforgettable – at the end of the world, where only glaciers and ice rule.
Your Journey in Detail
🏔️Puerto Montt to Chaitén
Your adventure begins in Puerto Montt, the gateway to the south. After a scenic ferry crossing through the fjords, you reach Chaitén, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 2008 and rebuilt. Today, the town is a symbol of the resilience of the Patagonians. Plan 2-3 days for this section to enjoy the hot springs of Pumalín and take your first hikes.
🚣Futaleufú & Seen-Region
Futaleufú is the mecca for adventurers – the turquoise water of the river of the same name is considered one of the best white water stretches in the world. Even if you don't raft, the detour is worth it: the landscape is breathtaking. Further south you pass Lago Yelcho and reach La Junta, where the Carretera finally becomes wild. Fill up here – the next gas station is far!
🧊Marble Caves & Villa O'Higgins
The Lago General Carrera enchants with its famous marble caves – from the boat you experience sculpted rock formations in surreal blue tones. The last kilometers to Villa O'Higgins are the loneliest: gravel tracks, glacier panoramas, and a feeling of total isolation. Once you arrive at your destination, you have reached the end of the world – you can only continue on foot or by boat to Argentina.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Fill up at EVERY opportunity! Gas stations are rare and have irregular opening hours.
- ✓Reserve ferries in high season (Dec-Feb) at least 1 week in advance.
- ✓A 4WD camper is strongly recommended – many sections are unpaved.
