Route Overview
About this Tour
The Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island is considered one of the world's most beautiful coastal roads and is Nova Scotia's pride. The loop route leads through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, along dramatic cliffs, through Gaelic-influenced fishing villages, and offers chances for whale watching, Celtic music, and some of Canada's friendliest people.
Your Journey in Detail
🏞️Baddeck & the Northeast
Baddeck on Bras d'Or Lake is Cape Breton's heart – a charming little town where Alexander Graham Bell spent his final years (the Bell Museum is worth seeing with its inventions and flight experiments). From here, start the Cabot Trail loop clockwise or counterclockwise – both directions have their fans, but counterclockwise (via Englishtown) means driving on the ocean side with the best views. The drive along the northeast coast is spectacular: small bays, rock cliffs, and fishing villages alternate. In Englishtown, take the small ferry (free!) across the narrow strait. Ingonish is the largest coastal village and starting point for whale-watching tours.
🐋Cape Breton Highlands National Park
The centerpiece of the route is Cape Breton Highlands National Park – a highland plateau that drops dramatically to the sea. The road here is legendary: tight curves, steep climbs, viewpoints that take your breath away. The Skyline Trail is the most famous hiking path and leads to the 'Cabot Trail Viewpoint' with its iconic view of the loops the highway cuts into the cliffs. In the evening, moose often come to the clearing at the trail's end – magical moments! The park is home to moose, black bears, lynx, and the rare Canada lynx.
🎻Celtic Music & Community
Cape Breton is one of the most vibrant centers of Celtic culture outside Scotland and Ireland. The Scottish Gaelic settlers who came in the 18th century have preserved their music, dances, and hospitality. On any summer evening, 'ceilidhs' take place in pubs and community centers – traditional music sessions where everyone is welcome. The Cape Breton fiddle has a distinctive style, developed over generations. Iona houses the Nova Scotia Highland Village, an open-air museum of Gaelic life.
