Route Overview
About this Tour
The Salzkammergut is like something from a picture book: turquoise-blue lakes reflecting snow-capped mountain peaks, quaint villages with flower-filled balconies, and a peacefulness that's immediately contagious. From the city of Mozart, Salzburg, you'll explore one of Europe's most beautiful lake regions – including the world-famous Hallstatt, often called the 'most beautiful village in the world'. This route is perfect for those who want to combine nature, hiking, and authentic Austrian culture. The crystal-clear lake water invites swimming and water sports in summer!
Your Journey in Detail
🏔️Salzburg – The Mozart City
Start in the beautiful city of Salzburg. The baroque old town (UNESCO World Heritage!) delights with the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Cathedral, and the lanes of Getreidegasse. Mozart was born here and the city breathes music and culture. In summer, the world-famous Salzburg Festival beckons. Lake Fuschl is only 20 minutes away – perfect first stop at the water!
🌊Hallstatt & World Heritage Region
Hallstatt is an absolute must! The picturesque village on Lake Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pastel-colored houses nestled against the mountain are world-famous. Visit the salt mine (with salt slide!) and enjoy the view from the Skywalk. Note: Hallstatt is very popular – early morning or late afternoon is quieter. With a campervan, it's best to park a bit outside.
🎿Wolfgangsee & Imperial Villas
Lake Wolfgang with the towns of St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen is Austrian idyll at its purest. The Schafberg Railway (a cog railway from 1893!) takes you to 1,783m altitude with sensational panoramas. In Bad Ischl, where Emperor Franz Joseph and Sissi once resided – the nostalgic flair is still tangible today. The region is perfect for hiking, cycling, or simply relaxing.
💡Practical Tips
