About this Tour

The Red Centre is Australia's spiritual and geographic heart – a landscape of otherworldly beauty, shaped by red earth, ancient rock formations, and an Aboriginal culture dating back over 60,000 years. Uluru (formerly Ayers Rock) is one of the world's most iconic natural wonders, and seeing it changes most visitors profoundly. This route is pure adventure – and perfect for campervans wanting to experience the vastness of the Outback.

Your Journey in Detail

🪨Uluru – The Sacred Rock

Uluru is more than a rock – it's a living sacred site of the Anangu, the local Aboriginal people who have lived here for tens of thousands of years. Climbing the rock was respectfully closed in 2019, but the Base Walk (10 km) around the entire circumference reveals so much more: sacred sites, rock paintings, waterholes, and the incredible texture of the sandstone up close. Sunrise and sunset at Uluru are transcendent – the colors shift through every shade of red, from pale orange to deep purple, as the sun rises or sets on the horizon. Cultural tours with Anangu guides offer insights into 'Tjukurpa', the complex belief system connecting land, law, and spirituality.

🌅Kata Tjuta – The Many Heads

Kata Tjuta (formerly 'The Olgas') is often less crowded than Uluru, but for many is equally, if not more, spectacular. This group of 36 dome-shaped rocks spans a much larger area than Uluru and offers more dramatic hiking opportunities. The Valley of the Winds Walk (7.4 km) is the highlight: it leads between the massive rock domes, through dry gorges, and to viewpoints with panoramic views. Morning sun makes the orange of the rocks glow – start early! For those with less time or fitness, the Walpa Gorge Walk (2.6 km) offers a shorter alternative to a narrow gorge between two domes.

🦘Kings Canyon & Alice Springs

Kings Canyon, about three hours' drive from Uluru, completes the Red Centre triangle. The gorge is 100 meters deep, with vertical sandstone walls and the 'Garden of Eden', a permanent waterhole with palms and cycads – an oasis in the midst of desert. The Rim Walk (6 km, 3-4 hours) leads around the entire rim of the canyon and offers breathtaking views – but the first steps ('Heartbreak Hill') are steep! An early start is mandatory as the trail closes in extreme heat. Alice Springs ('Alice' to locals) is the Outback's service center – not a beauty, but authentic. The Desert Park offers an excellent introduction to desert ecosystems.
