Route Overview
About this Tour
The 'Accursed Mountains' (Bjeshkët e Nemura) are one of the wildest places in Europe. Rugged peaks, crystal clear glacier lakes, and villages that for centuries were only reachable on foot – here you experience Albania from its most adventurous side. The centerpiece is the crossing of Lake Koman: a 2.5-hour ferry trip through a gorge that rivals the fjord landscapes of Norway. On the other bank await Valbona and Theth, two mountain villages with hiking trails that are among the most beautiful in the Balkans.
Your Journey in Detail
🏔️Shkodra & Koman
Shkodra is the charming border town to the north – relaxed, friendly, perfect for acclimatizing. From here the legendary ferry starts early in the morning across Lake Koman. The backdrop is surreal: steep rock walls, green slopes, turquoise water – like a fjord in the Mediterranean.
🚢Valbona Entdecken
Valbona is the gateway to the wilderness. The hike to Theth over the 1,759m high pass is a classic – 6-7 hours through alpine landscapes that evoke comparisons with Switzerland. The guesthouses in Valbona serve homemade dishes and hospitality you won't soon forget.
🥾Theth & Abenteuer
Theth is even more remote – until a few years ago it was completely cut off in winter. The Grunas waterfall, the Blue Eye, and the traditional stone houses of the region make it the perfect hiking destination. Campers stay below – here you only go on foot or with a 4WD jeep.
💡Practical Tips
- ✓Definitely reserve the Koman ferry in advance – especially during the high season!
- ✓For the Valbona-Theth trek: have luggage transferred by horse.
- ✓In the north, only 4WD away from the main roads – 2WD is enough for the coast.
