Looking for the perfect campsite in Zumaia Flysch? With Campcruisers you can easily find and book your ideal pitch. Discover geological, roadtrip, guide and more when you camp in Zumaia Flysch.

When you drive your motorhome along the winding roads of the Basque coast, the Zumaia Flysch announces itself from afar through the tangy scent of the Atlantic. It smells of salt, seaweed, and wet stone. It is a place where time takes on a different meaning, as the layered rock formations tell the story of 60 million years of Earth's history. For us campers, this place is an absolute highlight because it offers the perfect mix of raw nature and Basque coziness.

Camping here means falling asleep to the sound of the surf and letting your gaze wander over the rugged cliffs while having your first coffee in the morning. Unlike an anonymous hotel room, here you are part of the landscape. You feel the wind shaking your van and hear the screeching of the seagulls sailing over Playa de Itzurun. The best time to travel for your trip is late spring or early autumn. Then the air is clear, the temperatures are perfect for hiking, and the large tourist crowds of the summer months are slowly departing. But be aware: the Basque Country is green because it rains often. So be sure to pack good rain gear and a heater for cool nights so that your camping experience remains cozy.

Unforgettable Experiences & Must-Sees

An absolute must is the chapel Ermita de San Telmo. It is spectacularly perched on the cliffs and offers what is probably the most iconic view of the Flysch. It's best to leave your motorhome in the designated parking spaces at the harbor, as the access to the chapel is extremely narrow for large vehicles and closed to through traffic. From there, a short walk leads directly to this magical place. If you are lucky and there at low tide, the true wonder reveals itself: the ribs of the Flysch rise from the sea like the back of a dragon.

Another highlight is Playa de Itzurun. This beach is not only a filming location for Game of Thrones, but also a place with a very special energy. The sand is dark, the water often stormy. Here you can refresh yourself in the cold Atlantic after a long drive. For a snack in between, you should definitely dive into the old town of Zumaia. My culinary insider tip: find a small bar and order Pintxos with Antxoa (anchovies) along with a glass of Txakoli, the sparkling white wine of the region. It is poured into the glass from a great height to activate the carbonation – a real spectacle.

If you want to see the coast from a completely different perspective, book a boat tour in the port of Zumaia. With the camper, you see the cliffs from above, but from the water, you can truly recognize the massive dimensions of the rock layers. Be sure to choose tours that comply with ecological standards to protect this sensitive ecosystem.
