Asturias is the soul of Northern Spain. When you’re traveling with your motorhome in Asturias, you’ll quickly notice that clocks tick differently here. It smells like a mixture of salty sea breeze and the heavy, sweet scent of eucalyptus forests. When you open the sliding door of your van in the morning, you often hear nothing but the distant roar of the surf or the gentle ringing of cowbells in the mountains. Camping in Asturias means having the ultimate choice: do you want to stay right on a rugged cliff edge or set up camp in the shade of the Picos de Europa? The landscape is unique because the high mountains reach almost to the Atlantic here. The best time to travel for camping in Asturias is from May to September. But be careful: the region isn't called the Costa Verde for nothing. Be sure to pack a raincoat, because the lush green needs water. In July and August, the coastal sites get very crowded, so it's worth using the low season or booking sites in advance. If you're looking for solitude, the months of May and June are ideal, when the gorse turns the mountains yellow.

Unforgettable Experiences & Must-Sees

The Lagos de Covadonga are an absolute must. But be careful: in high season, access for private vehicles is closed. Be sure to book your tickets online in advance, park your motorhome in Cangas de Onís, and take the shuttle bus. The light up there at over 1,000 meters by the mountain lakes is magical. Another highlight is the fishing village of Cudillero. The colorful houses cling to the hillside like an amphitheater. With a camper, you shouldn't even try to drive into the narrow town center. Use the official parking lot at the harbor and stroll in on foot. For beach lovers, the Playa de Gulpiyuri is a special tip: a tiny beach in the middle of the countryside, about a hundred meters from the sea, which is supplied with water through underground tunnels. If you're hungry, look for an authentic sidrería. Order a bottle of cider and let someone show you how to pour the apple wine from a great height into the glass to aerate it. This goes well with a Fabada Asturiana, a hearty bean stew that will fuel you for any hike.
