The Sailing Area: The Friese Meren as the Heart
The Friese Meren form the navigational center of every houseboat trip in Friesland. They constitute a connected network of approximately 24 lakes, linked by canals, waterways, and short stretches of river, extending across central and southwestern Friesland. Among the best-known bodies of water are the Sneekermeer, the Slotermeer, the Tjeukemeer, and the Koevordermeer, each with its own distinct character—from open sailing waters to quiet, village-adjacent bays.
Route characteristics often change within just a few kilometers: wide lake surfaces with waves in windy conditions alternate with narrow, village-through routes where slow speeds and consideration for rowboats, SUPs, and anglers are essential. This variety makes the area attractive to houseboat travelers but also demands constant adjustments to driving style and daily distances.
