The Waterways: Where a Houseboat Can Sail on the Hawkesbury River
The Hawkesbury River originates in the hinterland of Sydney and flows into the Tasman Sea at Broken Bay after about 120 kilometers. For houseboat travelers, the wide, tide-influenced lower reaches between Wisemans Ferry and Broken Bay are particularly relevant, complemented by the tributaries Berowra Creek, Cowan Creek, Mooney Mooney Creek, and Marramarra Creek. These side streams lie mostly within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park or Marramarra National Park and offer quiet, sheltered anchorages.
Important for trip planning is the so-called “imaginary line,” a non-physical boundary defined by the NSW Water Authority that determines how far upstream or downstream a particular type of boat may travel. These lines run across the river at certain points near Brooklyn or Spencer, for example, and separate zones with different speed limits or usage restrictions. For houseboat skippers, this means: Before setting off, the current waterway map from the authority should be consulted, as these lines and the associated rules are adjusted from time to time.
