Location & Getting to Elba
Elba, the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, lies about 10 kilometers off the coast of the Italian region of Tuscany and belongs to the province of Livorno. The island is known for its diverse landscape, ranging from rolling hills and dense forests to rugged coastlines. Getting to Elba is mainly done by ferry from Piombino Marittima. Several ferry companies, including Toremar, Moby Lines, and Blu Navy, offer regular connections to Portoferraio, Rio Marina, and Cavo.
From Munich, you can reach Piombino in about 9 hours via the A8 and A1. Toll fees in Austria and Italy should be factored in. Those coming from Frankfurt take the A5 and A1, which takes about 10-11 hours. Coming from Hamburg, plan for about 16 hours via the A7 and A1. The ferry crossing from Piombino to Portoferraio, Elba's main town, takes about an hour. It is advisable to book ferry tickets in advance, especially in high season, to avoid waiting times.
As an alternative to arriving with your own vehicle, there is the possibility of taking the train to Piombino Marittima. The station is located directly at the ferry port. From there, trains run regularly to Florence and other Tuscan cities. The nearest airport is Marina di Campo Airport (EBA) on Elba itself. However, this is only served by a few airlines. Another option is Pisa Airport (PSA), from which you can reach Piombino by train or bus. On Elba itself, it is best to get around with your own vehicle, a rental car, or the bus. A well-developed bus network connects most places on the island. There is also the possibility of renting bicycles or e-bikes to explore the island on your own. The roads on Elba are partly winding and steep, so careful driving is recommended.
Overview of Elba's Subregions
Elba can be roughly divided into four main regions: the north coast, the east coast, the south coast, and the west coast, all of which have their own charm and character. The north coast of Elba, around Portoferraio, is characterized by a diverse landscape with sandy beaches, pebble bays, and steep cliffs. Portoferraio, the island's capital, offers a historic old town with numerous sights, including the Medici fortresses and Napoleon's winter residence. In the surrounding area, you will find popular seaside resorts such as Biodola and Procchio, which are particularly suitable for families. Active travelers can hike, mountain bike, or practice water sports here.
The east coast, with the main town of Rio Marina, is known for its iron-rich soils and traces of mining. Rio Marina itself is a charming port town with an interesting mineral museum. The beaches in this region are often characterized by dark sand. Nearby is Cavo, a small coastal town with a beautiful sandy beach and a relaxed atmosphere. The east coast is ideal for vacationers seeking peace and quiet and wanting to enjoy nature. The south coast of Elba, around Marina di Campo, is characterized by long sandy beaches and lush vegetation. Marina di Campo is a lively seaside resort with a wide selection of restaurants, bars, and shops. The long sandy beach is particularly popular with families. In the surrounding area, there are other beautiful beaches such as Cavoli and Fetovaia. The south coast is ideal for beach vacationers and water sports enthusiasts. The west coast, with the main town of Marciana Marina, is the wildest and most untouched region of Elba. Here, steep cliffs, dense forests, and lonely bays dominate. Marciana Marina is a picturesque coastal town with a small harbor and a beautiful promenade. In the surrounding area is Monte Capanne, the highest mountain on Elba, which can be reached by cable car. The west coast is ideal for hikers, nature lovers, and those seeking tranquility.
Camping on Elba: What to Expect?
The camping landscape on Elba is diverse and offers the right pitch for every taste and budget. In total, there are about 70 campsites on the island, most of which are located near the coast. You will find large resort sites with pools, animation, and extensive services, but also smaller, nature-oriented sites that are ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Some campsites also offer agriturismo-like experiences with regional products.
Prices for a pitch vary depending on the season, location, and equipment. In the high season (July/August), you should expect prices between 30 and 60 euros per night for a pitch for two people. In the low season (May/June and September/October), prices are significantly lower, often between 20 and 40 euros. Many campsites also offer package deals for longer stays. The size of the pitches also varies greatly. On larger sites, the plots are often parceled out and offer sufficient space for caravans, motorhomes, and tents. Smaller sites often have natural pitches that are less demarcated. Regarding shade, you should inform yourself in advance. Some sites offer shady pitches under pine or eucalyptus trees, while others are more sunnily located.
The sanitary facilities on the campsites are generally clean and well-maintained, although the standard varies depending on the site. Many sites have modern sanitary buildings with showers, toilets, washbasins, and washing machines. Wi-Fi is available on most sites, although the quality can vary depending on location and usage. The power supply is usually sufficient, with most pitches having 6-10 amps. It is recommended to bring an adapter for Italian sockets. A reservation is recommended, especially in the high season, as the most popular campsites are often fully booked. Some sites also offer online reservations. Last-minute chances exist mainly in the low season or on smaller sites.

Insider Knowledge & Secret Tips
The low season (May/June and September/October) is the best time for a camping holiday on Elba. The temperatures are pleasantly mild, the beaches are emptier, and the prices are lower. In addition, nature is particularly beautiful during this time. A less known place is the mountain village of Sant’Ilario, located about 5 km from Marina di Campo. Here you will find quaint alleys, traditional houses, and a breathtaking view of the coast. The village is reachable via the SP25. Another secret tip is the beach of Remaiolo, located at the southern tip of Elba. The beach is only accessible via an unpaved path and is therefore often deserted. At the local markets in Portoferraio and Marina di Campo, you can buy fresh regional products such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, and cold cuts. Many wineries also offer direct sales, where you can taste and buy local wines such as Aleatico. In August, the Festa della Madonna takes place in Portoferraio, a traditional festival with processions, music, and fireworks. A culinary specialty of Elba is Stoccafisso alla Riese, a dish with stockfish, tomatoes, capers, and olives. Locals like to visit Trattoria La Barca in Porto Azzurro, where you get traditional Elban dishes at fair prices. A worthwhile day trip is the island of Pianosa, located about 13 km from Elba. The island used to be a prison island and is now a nature reserve. The crossing takes about 1 hour and costs approx. 40 euros. You can explore the island by bike or on foot and enjoy the untouched nature.
